UAE and Iraq Draw 1–1 in Abu Dhabi World Cup Qualifier First Leg

The UAE and Iraq played out a gripping 1–1 draw in Abu Dhabi in the first leg of their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff, leaving the race wide open ahead of the decisive second leg in Basra. Both sides had opportunities to win, with UAE pushing hard late in the match and Iraq relying on physicality and fast transitions to stay threatening throughout.

A High-Intensity Match Ends Level

The evening began with enormous energy inside the stadium as both teams walked out determined to take an advantage into the second leg. Iraq struck the first blow, scoring early after a messy defensive sequence from the UAE. A long free kick was floated into the area, and the UAE backline failed to clear decisively. The loose ball fell kindly for Ali Al Hamadi, who reacted quickest to put Iraq 1–0 ahead in the 10th minute.

But the UAE responded brilliantly. Only eight minutes later, a well-worked move down the left ended with Ramadan delivering an outstanding cross into the box. Luanzinho timed his jump perfectly and powered home a superb header to level the match at 1–1, bringing the crowd to life and restoring belief.

From that moment, the match became open, fast and fiercely contested. Iraq used their physical strength and direct play to create danger, while the UAE grew into the game, especially in possession.

UAE Take Control but Miss Key Chances

As the first half progressed, the UAE settled into a confident rhythm, stringing passes together and controlling large spells of possession. Khalid Eissa, the UAE goalkeeper, was outstanding throughout the match, producing multiple crucial saves, including a sharp block in a one-on-one situation with Al Hamadi.

Despite Iraq’s constant threat from set pieces and long balls, UAE had promising moments of their own. Nicolas Gimenez, Ramadan, Sultan Adil and Meloni all played key roles in creating attacking opportunities. Yet, the breakthrough remained elusive before halftime.

The second half began at a blistering pace, with both teams firing shots early. Iraq’s coach made an immediate change by introducing his star striker, hoping to add more bite in the final third. UAE responded with substitutions of their own, bringing on Caio Lucas and Ali Saleh to increase attacking punch.

Chaotic Final Minutes: VAR Denies UAE Winner

As the match entered its final 20 minutes, UAE began to dominate. Their pressing improved, their possession sharpened, and wave after wave of attacks pushed Iraq deeper into their own half.

The biggest moment of the night came when Caio Lucas headed the ball into the net, sending UAE fans into wild celebration—only for VAR to rule it out for offside. It was a heartbreaking moment for the hosts, who were by then fully in control and sensing a late winner.

In added time, UAE created more half-chances, including another header from Lucas that flew just over the bar. Iraq, meanwhile, defended bravely, clearing multiple dangerous deliveries into the box and holding firm under intense pressure.

Even with eight minutes of stoppage time, neither side could find the decisive goal.

Defensive Injuries and Tactical Battles

The match also saw key tactical battles across the pitch. Iraq’s aggressive style caused problems at times, especially in aerial duels and long passes, where they often won the second ball. UAE’s midfield, led by Yahya Nader and Gimenez, improved as the match continued, helping the side regain control.

A late injury to Meloni forced another change for the UAE, adding more tension in the final minutes.

Despite all the drama, no team could find the winner.

What the Result Means

With away goals not counting in this playoff format, the 1–1 draw leaves everything still to be decided. The second leg in Basra will determine who advances to the next stage of qualification and moves one step closer to securing a spot in the intercontinental playoffs.

Iraq will feel confident playing at home in front of their passionate supporters, while the UAE know they must deliver one of their strongest performances of the campaign to progress.

The tie remains perfectly balanced—and the second leg promises to be a high-pressure, high-stakes showdown.
