UAE to Witness Rare Blood Moon on September 7, 2025
Dubai: Stargazers across the UAE are in for a spectacular celestial display as a rare total lunar eclipse, known as the Blood Moon, lights up the skies on the evening of September 7, continuing into September 8. According to the Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG), this will be “one of the most photogenic lunar eclipses of the decade,” with 82 minutes of totality, making it one of the longest eclipses in recent history.
What Causes the Blood Moon?
A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes directly between the Sun and Moon, casting its shadow on the lunar surface. Sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere removes blue light, leaving the Moon bathed in vivid red and orange hues.
UAE Viewing Timings (Local Time)
7:28 pm – Penumbral eclipse begins
8:27 pm – Partial eclipse begins
9:30 pm – Total eclipse begins
10:12 pm – Maximum eclipse
10:53 pm – Total eclipse ends
11:56 pm – Partial eclipse ends
12:55 am (Sept 8) – Penumbral eclipse ends
In total, UAE residents can enjoy nearly five and a half hours of eclipse viewing.
Where to Watch
The eclipse will be visible across the UAE with the naked eye — no filters required. DAG recommends telescopes or binoculars for enhanced views. A special livestream will provide real-time feeds from observatories across six continents. DAG also plans a unique shot featuring the Burj Khalifa as a backdrop, in collaboration with photographer Rami Dibo.
Why It’s Rare
This eclipse is unusually long and will be visible to 87% of the world’s population, making it a truly global event.
